Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson was appointed prime minister by the Swedish parliament making her the first woman to lead Sweden.

Former finance minister in the government of Stefan Lofven, 54, she was elected with 117 votes in favor, 57 abstentions and 174 against.

Under the Swedish system, a candidate for prime minister does not need a favorable majority, as long as he does not have the opposite one.
