The alleged perpetrator, who raced into a Christmas parade in the United States in an off-road vehicle and killed several people, has been charged with five murders.

The prosecutor said on Tuesday during a court hearing in the small town of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, another child died as a result of the attack.

That brought the death toll to six after the incident on Sunday.

The indictment should be expanded accordingly.

The judicial officer in charge, Kevin Costello, set the bail for the defendant Darrell Brooks in view of his criminal record from several states at five million dollars (4.4 million euros).

"The nature of this act is shocking," he said.

Charges are "first degree deliberate homicide"

The man raced in an SUV in a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Greater Milwaukee, on Sunday.

According to the police, the fatalities were between the ages of 52 and 81.

The age of the youngest victim is unknown.

More than 48 people were injured, many of them children.

If found guilty, the 39-year-old could face life imprisonment.

It is still not known why, according to the police, he raced into the crowd at the parade on Sunday.

In the indictment, two police officers who were there are quoted as saying that the perpetrator's driving behavior suggests that he intentionally drove into the crowd.

According to the latest findings, the man moved the car on a rolling course, presumably in order to be able to run over more people.

According to Wisconsin law, the defendant is charged with "first degree deliberate homicide".

In German law, that would correspond most closely to the offense of murder
