One of the least pleasant characteristics of the current season is sore throat.
The same oppressive and unpleasant feeling of burning, pain or difficulty swallowing.
Not something you die from (usually), but also not something that is pleasant to hang out with all day.
The instinctive reaction of many of us is to immediately boil water and make tea or something hot to drink, and not in vain.
According to Dr. Idan Goren, tea does help relieve sore throats, and it does so on several levels. First, one of the problems with sore throats is that people eat and drink less and therefore tend to become dehydrated. Drinking beverages like tea helps prevent dehydration. In addition, types of tea Many contain compounds that soothe sore throats and thus help improve the feeling.

Does tea really help with a sore throat?

In fact, any hot drink increases blood flow to the area and thus promotes recovery processes.
And this beneficial effect can appear even regardless of the drinking and digestion of the substances found in tea but even directly.
For example, a study examining the effect of gargling green tea tincture every 6 hours found that within a day the symptoms associated with a sore throat decreased.
You can also gargle, but it's nicer to drink it.

But between us, it's much nicer to drink the tea than to gargle it, so here are 3 types of tea that beyond all we have already mentioned above, have other benefits that can help relieve a sore throat:
Licorice tea
There are studies that have shown that bald licorice, or licorice as it is better known, can reduce phlegm and runny nose and be used as a type of buffering material that coats the throat and relieves pain.
There are 3 main ingredients in licorice root that can contribute to relieving a sore throat: Liquilitin and liquiritigenin are two expectorants that release phlegm and allow us to get it out in a cough.
And a third substance called Glycyrrhizin provides a protective layer around the tissues in the throat that reduce the sensation of irritation when swallowed.
In a study conducted this year (2021) patients underwent surgery under anesthesia in which the soul tube was inserted down their throats.
When they woke up, they were given to gargle a solution of licorice tea or green tea tincture - and both were able to reduce the feeling of pain in the throat following the trachea compared to patients who did not gargle the solutions.
green tea
Green tea contains extremely powerful antioxidant compounds called polyphenols.
These antioxidants strengthen the immune system and help it fight the bacterial or viral infection that is the one that causes the sore throat.
In addition, green tea has another natural compound called epigallocatechin-3-gallate that has its anti-inflammatory properties because it fights inflammatory proteins, which can reduce or moderate the local inflammatory response in the throat, thus relieving pain a little.
As with licorice tea from the previous section, here too you can get the relief both following drinking the tea or gargling.
If you are not into drinking it, just gargle the tea for 30 seconds so that it flushes the back of your throat well.
Note that the temperature of the drink is not too hot, boiling tea will only increase the local irritation and will not relieve the pain.
Fights bacteria and viruses and relieves pain.

Ginger tea
Ginger root contains herbal compounds whose properties are analgesic and anti-inflammatory.
In addition to the local pain relief it can provide, there is also some scientific evidence that ginger can also shorten the duration of the disease in case of flu or colds.
According to some of these studies, ginger has antimicrobial properties that help the body fight both bacterial and viral infections, both of which can be the cause of sore throats.
Although, it is important to note that these studies have examined the effect of ginger extracts, which are more concentrated in relation to ginger tea.
So it is quite possible that this effect will be less when the ginger is consumed in this way.
