(ANSA) - TEL AVIV, NOV 26 - Israel is "on the verge of an emergency". Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said this, asking "everyone to be ready to work 24 hours a day".

The premier's statement came after the news that the first case of the new South African variant B.1.1.529 was detected in the country in a citizen returned from Malawi.

Bennett - who has already decided to block the arrival in Israel of citizens of 6 countries in southern Africa and imposed restrictions on Israelis returning from those places - held a new emergency meeting this morning on the implications that the new variant may have for Israel.

Finally he recalled the importance of the national exercise 'Omega'on health emergencies that took place a week ago. (HANDLE).
