Long out of date, the saxophone is making a comeback in pop and song


From Damon Albarn to Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine, a good number of 2021 albums give pride of place to an instrument that has long been infrequent. Adrien Soleiman and Thomas de Pourquery, two of the most prominent saxophonists of the moment, tell.

The image is one of the most enduring clichés of the 1980s. It illustrated many video clips and commercials of the time.

To the point of disgusting an entire generation of an instrument that has become outdated overnight.

In 1984, George Michael opened one of his greatest hits -

Careless Whisper

 - with a powerful sax chorus without anyone finding fault with it.

Then, gradually, the instrument disappeared from radar and pop productions.

If it has kept its aura intact in the world of jazz, the sax has started to grow smaller with the general public.
