(ANSA) - MADRID, 29 NOV - Reigning champions Spain have been eliminated from the Davis Cup after a 2-1 defeat to Russia, which qualifies for the quarter-finals together with Novak Djokovic's Serbia best runner-up.

Feliciano Lopez brought a surprise first point to Spain by beating Andrey Rublev, but Daniil Medvedev easily equalized and the double Andrey Rublev / Aslan Karatsev snatched the point of victory against the Spanish couple Feliciano Lopez / Marcel Granollers. Russia thus arrived first in Group A and Spain second, but with a win / loss ratio that did not allow them to qualify.

Italy also wants the 'final four' of the Davis Cup, next weekend in Madrid.

The place will be played in the quarter-final this afternoon in Turin against Croatia, who yesterday won the other group with a 2-1 over Hungary.
