A seat for Claudio Lotito, the decision reaches the Senate

Claudio Lotito is one step away from entering Parliament. But nothing is taken for granted. Thursday, the Senate Chamber will discuss the report of the junta for the elections and immunities, which last September accepted an appeal presented by the patron of Lazio, recognizing him the right to sit at Palazzo Madama. The story has been going on for more than three years now, exactly since the spring of 2018, when Lotito ran for Forza Italia in a Campania boarding school. That seat was assigned to the parliamentarian Vincenzo Carbone, also in the running for the Azzurri, but Lotito filed a complaint, believing that there had been a miscalculation. In the first instance, the council of Palazzo Madama agreed with the white-blue patron, but the last, definitive word will be spoken by the Hall.

Lotito's story mirrors that of the entrepreneur Michele Boccardi, former Italian parliamentarian, who believes he is the legitimate 'holder' of the seat occupied by Carmela Minuto, also from FI, elected in Puglia. Boccardi also won the first round and awaits the final decision from Palazzo Madama. The Chamber will also discuss the contested election of Adriano Cario, for the South America constituency, now enrolled in the Mixed group. For three years now, Lotito has been approaching the parliamentary seat at the same speed with which he then moves away. Because his arrival in the Senate depends not only on the rules, but also on the mood of politics: both in the council and in the Chamber, the majorities count. Which have changed often and willingly since 2018. To say: when Lotito applied, theoutcome of the elections led to the birth of a yellow-green government, with Forza Italia in opposition. When Lotito won the appeal, the government had changed, and he was a Giallorossi.

Forza Italia was always in opposition, but in the meantime Lotito's competitor, that is Senator Carbone, had passed from Forza Italia to Italia viva, thus entering the majority. Now the scenario is still another. There is the grand coalition, the (almost) national unity: Forza Italia and Italia viva are allies in Mario Draghi's government. So making predictions about how it will end up in the House is not easy. That the game will be fought has already been seen when deciding when to play it. The timetable was for the discussion to start tomorrow. But Lega and Italia Viva have asked for a postponement, partly because work on the tax bill is underway and partly because the Renzians have a meeting with Draghi on the maneuver on their agenda tomorrow. The plenary vote rejected the request for postponement, which however c 'it was the same at the decision of the group leaders. But for just one day.
