(ANSAMed) - BEIRUT, NOVEMBER 30 - The populist Iraqi Shiite leader Moqtada Sadr has been confirmed the winner of the Iraqi legislative elections last October 10, with 73 seats out of 329 total.
This was announced today by the Iraqi Electoral Commission after a long and controversial procedure to recount the votes after accusations of fraud raised by the pro-Iranian armed parties, considered instead the great losers of the electoral consultations.
The recount of the votes, says the Electoral Commission, largely confirmed the initial results, because only five seats were reassigned following the revision of the ballots.
Sadr, who maintains ties with Iran despite having called for the restoration of Iraqi national sovereignty to the detriment of Iranian and US influences, has this week sought government allies among the rivals of the pro-Iranian armed parties.
The negotiations for the formation of the new executive can now last several weeks.
Local analysts say the new Iraqi government is likely to be formed after the end of this year.
