Bill Cosby was released that summer because of a procedural misconduct. The prosecution does not want to accept the overturning of the conviction for sexual assault - and is now turning to the US Supreme Court.

About half a year after the verdict against actor Bill Cosby was overturned, the responsible public prosecutor wants to challenge this decision in the highest US court.

A corresponding application had been handed over to the Supreme Court, said the prosecutor of Montgomery County in the US state of Pennsylvania.

It is still unclear whether the Supreme Court will really deal with the case.

The court rejects many of these applications.

Cosby was sentenced to a minimum of three and a maximum of ten years imprisonment for sexual assault in 2018.

More than 60 women had accused the actor and comedian of various kinds of sexual assault, but most of the cases are statute-barred.

The entertainer had always denied the allegations.

After Cosby had spent around three years in prison, the highest court in Pennsylvania surprisingly overturned his conviction in June - and the actor was released.

Due to an agreement with a prosecutor previously involved in the case, Cosby should not have been charged in this matter, the court argued.

The judges pointed out that the then investigating public prosecutor had promised after the uncovering of the allegations in 2005 not to initiate a criminal case against Cosby if he testifies in a civil case for compensation.

The prosecutor's successor later initiated criminal proceedings against the actor.

Statements by Cosby from the civil proceedings were used against him.

Bill Cosby was known as "America's Dad" in the United States for decades.

In his role as a lovable doctor and good-natured family man on his "Cosby Show", he was one of the most popular TV stars in the country.

His case was considered the first conviction of a prominent suspect since the #MeToo movement began.
