In Bissendorf, Lower Saxony, 150 pigs died in a stable fire on Monday afternoon.
This was announced by the Osnabrück police in a press release.
There were 210 pigs in the barn, 60 survived.
People weren't hurt.
The cause of the fire is still unclear, the police are investigating.
The damage caused is estimated at a high six-figure amount.
The surviving animals may also be killed
It could be that the surviving animals also have to be killed afterwards: The animals were bred for consumption and inhaled smoke during the fire.
The responsible veterinary office must now decide whether the animals can still be slaughtered and whether their meat is suitable for eating.
