The free press is gradually disappearing from the media landscape.
In front of metro entrances, the French have long allowed themselves to be tempted by employees distributing daily newspapers.
“When free ones like 20 Minutes, Metro or Direct Matin (formerly CNEWS) appeared in the 2000s, some traditional newspapers even feared that they would capture part of their readership,
recalls Alexis Lévrier, historian of journalism.
This time seems very far away today. ”
In recent years, faced with new modes of consumption on smartphones, and with advertising as the sole source of income, the free press has gradually sank into a financial pit.
The first victim was Metro, which ceased publication in 2015.
