Legesse told state media that the towns and their surroundings "were freed by the terrorists of the TPLF", referring to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Tigray group.
The government "in a short time" will also retake the cities of Desie and Lalibela, he added.
The United States has openly criticized Abiy's management of the war, Nobel Peace Prize 2019 for the historic move of ending hostility with Eritrea and considering its rise as a reformer and key ally.
