Fighting action against the Omicron variant.

Like many other countries around the world, France has decided to act to try to cope with this new mutation of Covid-19.

After simply interrupting flights from southern Africa, the government decided on Wednesday to put in place a new, more severe protocol for all international travel.

From southern Africa

While flights from southern Africa were simply suspended last week - and until midnight Friday - they will be restored from Saturday morning, Gabriel Attal announced on Wednesday, after the Council ministers. But this recovery will be framed in an "extremely strict and drastic" way, he immediately assured.

Until now, countries were classified into three colors (green, orange and red), which determine the measures surrounding travel. The government has decided to add a new category, called "scarlet red", in which "the countries most at risk, especially with the presence of the Omicron variant" will be found, detailed Gabriel Attal. This color will integrate “the seven countries of southern Africa (…). Three countries will be added: Malawi, Zambia and Mauritius, ”the government spokesperson said.

Only “persons of French nationality, European nationals, diplomatic personnel and flight personnel” will be able to reach France from countries in the scarlet red category.

“There will be no authorized trips for professional, tourist, family, study or even research purposes,” said Gabriel Attal.

The protocol implies that people authorized to come to France from one of these ten destinations will have to take a test on their arrival in the territory in addition to the test to be carried out before departure.

If the test on arrival is negative, these travelers will be "subject to a prefectural isolation order in the place of their choice for seven days".

In the event of a positive test, this isolation must take place "in a hotel which has been designated" for a period of 10 days.

In the event of non-compliance with this measure, a fine of 1,000 to 1,500 euros will be imposed, warned Gabriel Attal, recalling that this isolation would be monitored.

Outside the European Union

More broadly, "a new reinforced protocol will apply for international travel," said Gabriel Attal on Wednesday, without specifying the date of implementation.

For travelers from outside the European Union, "a mandatory negative test of less than 48 hours" will be necessary to travel to France, whether or not they are vaccinated.

A major change, since until now, the protocol provided that vaccinated people - even from countries classified as red - did not have to provide tests to enter the territory.

Within the European Union

Another toughening: unvaccinated people from European Union countries will have to provide a negative test within 24 hours.

This was already the case for travelers from Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia.

The measure is now extended to all countries in the area, while a test of less than 72 hours was sufficient so far for the unvaccinated.
