It is already protected by the EU as a regional specialty.

Now the Thuringian bratwurst could also become a UNESCO cultural heritage: According to the State Chancellery on Thursday, it is one of eight proposals from Thuringian regions that are applying for inclusion in the nationwide register of "Intangible Cultural Heritage".

This describes local customs and traditional craftsmanship, for example.

Pork and natural casings

This year it had to serve as a vaccination incentive, now the Thuringian bratwurst could also make it onto the national cultural heritage list.

Not every sausage from Thuringia is a real Thuringian bratwurst: It may only be designated as such if it is produced in compliance with certain specifications.

Traditionally it consists only of pork.

Your sausage meat should be medium-fine and put in a natural casing.

And there are also rules for size according to EU standards: When it comes to the charcoal grill, the Thuringian sausage should be 15 to 20 centimeters long and 100 to 150 grams in weight.

Kindergarten idea, Christmas custom, watercress

In addition to the Thuringian sausage, the kindergarten idea based on Friedrich Fröbel (1782-1852) and the tradition of garden gnome production in Graefenroda, which was founded at the end of the 19th century, are on the list of suggestions, which are now initially assessed by a jury of experts from the state.

In addition, the “Brehms World - Animals and People” memorial in Renthendorf in East Thuringia, the German board game culture, Erfurt watercress, the pigeon market in Dermbach and the Christmas custom of the torch fire in Schweina (both in the Wartburg district) were proposed.

The four most promising applications will be forwarded to the federal level, where they will be assessed by the expert committee of the German Unesco commission.

The decision on inclusion in the nationwide directory will be made by the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture by the beginning of 2023.

Thuringia is already listed with four entries on the national cultural heritage list.

These are the Eisenach summer win, the Palm Sunday procession in Heiligenstadt, the Christmas tree decorations from Lauscha and the Skat game from Altenburg.
