Florian Hager is the new director of the Hessischer Rundfunk.
The previous deputy ARD program director was elected with a narrow majority at a meeting of the HR Broadcasting Council in Frankfurt am Main on Friday.
The 45-year-old prevailed with 18 to 14 votes against the HR operations director Stephanie Weber, as the council announced afterwards.
Hager's tenure was set at five years.
Both candidates had previously been proposed by a selection committee.
It took some time before Hager was found as his successor: at the end of October there was a stalemate in the Broadcasting Council in two ballots.
The candidates then ran again for election.
The acting director of the public broadcaster, Manfred Krupp, will retire in February 2022.
The 45-year-old Florian Hager studied media technology, computer science and film studies, among other things.
He was previously the main department head of program planning at Arte and managing director of funk, the youth program of ARD and ZDF.
Most recently he worked as deputy program director at the ARD media library.
