Panic among the residents of the Indonesian island of Java.
Semeru, the highest and most active volcano on the island, emitted a gigantic cloud of smoke and ash on Saturday.
Red lava flowed down the crater.
When the first reached villages and destroyed a bridge, the government sent rescue workers to the region to bring local residents to safety.
The Semeru volcano, which rises 3676 meters above sea level at its highest point, had already erupted in December 2020 and in January of this year.
In the most recent eruption, the ash plume was estimated to have risen more than twelve kilometers.
A restricted zone has been set up within a radius of five kilometers.
There are first reports of injuries and deaths.
