Baden-Württemberg's Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann only considers school closings "if nothing else works, with incidences like we have in Saxony, around 2000".

That said the Green politician on Saturday at the state party conference in Heidenheim, reports the "Badische Zeitung".

The incidence in Saxony is currently 1235.

In Baden-Württemberg, on the other hand, the number of infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days was 523.4.

In the schoolchildren's age groups, however, the values are significantly higher in the south-west: The Robert Koch Institute reported an incidence of 1,097 among 5- to 9-year-olds at the end of November, and an incidence of 10 to 14-year-olds 1302

However, individual regions report figures that differ significantly from the national average.

In the Schwarzwald-Baar district, currently the district most severely affected by Covid diseases, the incidence among schoolchildren up to nine years of age is currently 1821, among 10 to 14-year-olds even 2185.

According to the report, the teachers at the Baden-Württemberg grammar schools had previously requested that school closings no longer be ruled out in view of the corona situation.

"Every consideration for securing school operations must now be on the table," said Ralf Scholl, chairman of the Baden-Württemberg Philologists' Association.

The cancellation of face-to-face classes should "no longer be a taboo".

Kretschmann's statement also sparked sharp criticism from parents.

The Prime Minister was "obviously no longer in control of his senses," wrote a member of the State Parents' Council on Twitter.

Like other users, he demanded the resignation of the head of state.

On the other hand, there was support for the Green Prime Minister from the State Health Office.

Its chief epidemiologist told the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" that he did not believe that school closings would tip the scales in combating the pandemic.
