It is a vodka with a special note: a craft schnapps creation that was born out of necessity.
Because when forest fires raged in California in 2020, the smoke moved for many miles - including into the vineyards.
It changed the taste of the grapes and the juice made from them was inedible.
Then came the idea of the liquor company Hangar 1 to save the supposedly unsuccessful wine.
The result was the Smoke Point Vodka, which seems anything but unsuccessful.
Emily Webster, Hangar 1 Distillery
“We didn't want to make any particularly smoky vodka. Vodka is basically a neutral spirit, but it retains the character of the base material. So we were hoping to create something new in the vodka category, largely neutral, so that people could enjoy it and do something good for their community at the same time. "
The company says it donates the profits from its manufacture to the California Fire Foundation, which supports victims of the fires and the survivors of firefighters killed.
The wine failure was a financial blow for the Crimson Wine Group, but the smoke vodka is a small ray of hope.
Nicolas Quille, Crimson Wine Group
“I hope we don't need this every few years. But it's a good experiment, and when things get worse and these fires get worse and more frequent, it's definitely an option that needs to be on the table. "
The western United States is increasingly fighting extreme forest fires - a consequence of climate change.
The 2020 season was particularly devastating for the state of California.
And as soon as smoke even gets near the grapes, the winemakers start to tremble.
