They are crew members and passengers of a ship returning this Sunday to New Orleans with thousands of people on board.

Bad memories of the start of the health crisis.

As the start of the first wave of Covid-19 on the world, with all the same less drastic consequences, the ship Norwegian Breakaway could find itself at the heart of a viral storm with ten positive cases detected on board.

The liner "left New Orleans on November 28 and stopped in Belize, Honduras and Mexico during its trip," the Louisiana Department of Health said on Twitter on Saturday, specifying that "it there are more than 3,200 people on board ”.

The health department added that everyone on board should undergo a Covid test before disembarking.

"Those who will test positive for Covid-19 will have to either (1) use a personal vehicle to return directly to their personal residence or (2) self-confine", further detailed the Louisiana health department.

The nightmare of the "Diamond Princess"

The global cruise industry has been hit hard by the global Covid-19 pandemic.

In February 2020, a period during which the spread of the epidemic was still in its very early stages, a cruise ship named "Diamond Princess" was quarantined off the coast of Japan.

More than 700 people on board had then tested positive for Covid-19 and 13 had died, raising a wave of criticism against the Japanese authorities who had insisted that the passengers and the crew remain on the boat, where the virus had thus continued to spread.

Cruise operations in the United States were suspended in March 2020 to prevent the spread of the Covid.

Some cruise ships resumed operations in Europe and elsewhere last year, but the ban was maintained in the United States.

After a year marked by heavy financial losses, cruise industry giants resumed travel from the United States in May, after a green light from US authorities to restart travel on the condition that passengers and members of the crew are vaccinated.

Canada lifted its ban on cruise ships in its waters last month.
