After a particularly successful year in its tourism and travel industry, the Greek government is currently launching its winter tourism campaign. The state's revenue from tourism has generated more than € 10 billion - about € 4 billion more than projected.

Greek Tourism Minister Celis Kikillias, who provided the data to reporters in his country, said "tourism is the locomotive that drives the Greek economy, as it accounts for about 25 percent of it."

The minister added that "we expected revenue from tourism of five to six billion euros, and we passed the 10 billion. In addition, the year is not over yet, and we have tourists currently staying in Athens, Crete, Rhodes. Now we are ready to launch the winter tourism campaign."

The Schengen visa info website reports that the minister even added that the person who came up with the idea of producing pan-European corona vaccine certificates, and the person who proposed it to the heads of the European Commission, is none other than Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsutakis.

"This has created new conditions of safety for passengers across Europe, with visible results," he said, expressing optimism about 2022, thanks to many bookings already made.

When asked about corona vaccines, the Greek minister said the vaccine remains the most important weapon in the war against the corona plague, and the more people are vaccinated, the more life - both social and economic - will return to normal and pre-plague levels.

The big question: What will happen in 2022?

According to the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC), about 65.1 percent of the population in Greece is partially vaccinated (61.9 percent are fully vaccinated).

This is a gap of 4.3 percent to the detriment of Greece, compared to data from across the EU.

However, the number of vaccinated in Greece is 29.4 percent higher than the world average.

"From the very first moment, we have created a national immunization program in Greece, and recently we are witnessing a significant increase in the number of vaccinated and queues for vaccinated in the first vaccine," Kikillias added.

Of course, it is impossible to provide an accurate forecast as to what will happen in 2022, and it is difficult to deduce from the positive data of tourism in 2021 on the state of winter tourism.

This is especially in light of the many restrictions that European countries are expected to impose on their residents due to the spread of variant Omicron around the world.

Moreover, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), in the last seven days alone, an additional 44,348 corona patients were reported in Greece, as well as 640 corona-related deaths.
