"Volunteering is an extraordinary civil energy that helps communities to face the challenges of the time and its difficulties. It strengthens the bonds between people, is close to those in need, reduces social gaps, promotes hospitality and sustainability ". Thus the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the International Volunteer Day. The Day serves "to give due value to the numerous testimonies of humanity and altruism that improve our lives, without which institutions and legal systems would not be able to fully guarantee the principles they are inspired by".

"We had further proof of the importance and courage of volunteers and their associations in the emergency caused by the pandemic. Volunteers were in the front row, alongside doctors and nurses, in caring for the sick, in supporting those who were left alone. , in building connections where many risked being excluded "Thus the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella in a message for the International Volunteer Day" wanted 36 years ago by the United Nations ".

"Respect for the rights and freedoms of the person, in solidarity, - affirms the Head of State - is the most precious heritage that we must transfer to the new generations: and to this heritage the volunteers contribute with passion and ideals, with the strength of their testimony ".

"Institutions - local, national, international - have in volunteers and their associations important allies in dealing with the changes that are necessary to build a better society", concludes Mattarella.
