Hardly any other game determines the success or failure of an Xbox console generation as much as a new "Halo".

One year late, the latest part of the series, "Halo Infinite", will soon be released.

We were allowed to take a close look at it before the release.

These are our impressions.

It's a phenomenon: 81 million copies of "Halo" games have been sold worldwide to date. Mostly on Xbox consoles, on the PC the Master Chief has only been using the assault rifle for a few years. The saga of the silent Spartan super soldier, who never takes off his helmet and whose best friend was an artificial intelligence, delighted generations of gamers. And for many it is THE reason to get a new console.

Accordingly, Microsoft was nervous before the release of "Halo Infinite" *.

That had to be good, the game had to inspire.

And because a year and a half ago, when game scenes were shown for the first time, it just didn't know how to inspire, the publication was postponed for a full twelve months in order to continue working on it.

A decision that will certainly not have been easy for those responsible.

Because restarting two new consoles - the Series S and the Series X (here our test) - without a new Halo is a risk.

"Halo Infinite" in the test: Continuously captivating adventure of the new Master Chief

Well, thanks to the ongoing delivery bottlenecks, the delay has probably not had a noticeable effect on the sales figures for the new consoles - the

Xbox Series X in

particular

is still sold out everywhere even a year after its premiere

.

And now, just before Christmas, the gifts are simply brought forward for the fans of the Master Chief.

The fans have been able to play multiplayer for a few weeks now, but many, like me, have been waiting desperately for the new campaign.

Also interesting

: "Guardians of the galaxy" in the test - heart-warming steamy chat.

We were allowed to play it after Microsoft provided us with a test sample before the release.

And, so much can already be revealed:

it was worth the wait

.

The Master Chief's new adventure is consistently addicting.

And throws a lot of familiar things overboard in terms of game mechanics.

"Halo Infinite" in the test: For the first time in an open world full of adventure

The previous Halo parts were strictly linear shooters.

You ran from A to B - sometimes through the corridors of huge spaceships, sometimes over the surface of exotic planets.

And in the process you cut out everything that came to the mouth of the countless shotguns with which the game is crammed.

“Infinite” takes a different approach

.

It is true that here too you have your hands full to defend yourself against the "exiles", who this time represent the opponent class.

But after a strictly linear beginning, the eponymous halo ring, a gigantic construction of a world of rings in space, goes very quickly.

And there the map expands, "Halo" becomes an

open world game

for the first time

.

Little by little we are recapturing outposts, which brings us a number of

additional jobs

in the area. Sometimes a squad of marines has to be freed from the mess, sometimes a particularly nasty alien has to be freed or an opponent's power base has to be blown up piece by piece. It's really fun - also and above all because there is already a lot to do, but you

never

feel

overwhelmed by the flood of tasks

, as is often the case with the "Assassin's Creed" games, for example. And because you know that you are gradually working your way up to the really cool main missions.

The story is a feast for fans of the series

.

And largely incomprehensible to anyone who has not played all the parts, seen books, films and series.

Although you can follow the main story very well even without prior knowledge, with all the comments on Blood Fathers, Cortana or Dr.

But now most of them only understand Halsey by train station.

But that bothers a lot less than you might think, because

at its core Halo is a simple game

.

With good and bad and lots of lead.

We don't want to reveal much more at this point - but the plot is bursting with unexpected twists and turns and is really captivating in places.

"Halo Infinite": Technically clean, sound and translation outstanding

Technically, the campaign is already running very smoothly in the early version that we tested. The pretty graphics run smoothly across the screen, the gunplay is excellent -

a clear step forward compared to "Halo 5"

, which we

gambled

through again shortly before. While the use of weapons always felt a bit synthetic there, it looks significantly improved in the new "Halo Infinite". It's not quite as good as Destiny 2 just yet, but the progress is clearly noticeable. It's just a lot of fun to jump into the fray, constantly changing weapons, throwing grenades around and then

using the new grappling hook

to get to safety.

Graphically, “Halo Infinite” doesn't tear down trees

, but it does look very pretty.

However, you can't help but get the impression that there would have been a lot more if it had been released exclusively for the Series X.

But since it still has to run on the old and now quite weak Xbox One, what you see is probably the limit of what is feasible.

The sound, on the other hand, is beyond any doubt - it cracks, the windows clink, the opponents' sayings are never boring, the German translation is excellent.

Conclusion on "Halo Infinite"

"Halo Infinite" from 343 Studios is exactly what fans have been waiting for so long.

An extremely extensive shooter

with an exciting, albeit very complicated story, which clearly benefits from the decision

to introduce

an

open

game world

this time

.

So it would be well worth the full price - if it weren't also available completely free of charge to all Game Pass subscribers.

At the latest, when you have the Xbox Game Pass, you don't actually need to think twice.

Master Chief, take over!
