(ANSA) - LUMAJANG, 06 DEC - A new eruption of the Semeru volcano, in Indonesia, has forced rescuers to suspend the search for any survivors.
Images from above showed the extent of the devastation wreaked by the highest mountain on the island of Java with its streets covered with ashes and mud and thousands of panicked people fleeing from their homes.
At least 15 people are dead, 27 others are still missing.
"All the teams have been temporarily withdrawn because there was a small eruption and it could be dangerous," explained one of the rescuers, Rizal Purnama.
"The research will continue when the situation is a little safer."
