(ANSA) - LONDON, DECEMBER 06 - The Omicron variant of the corovanirus is destined to become the dominant one in the United Kingdom within one month. This is the prediction made at the BBC by Professor PaulHunter, an infectious disease expert at the University of East Anglia. According to the scientist, "it is spreading a little faster than the Delta variant". He adds: "How it is likely to spread in the UK still remains uncertain, but I think the early signs are that it will probably spread fairly quickly and probably start overtaking the Delta within the next few weeks or a month or so."
It remains to be understood how harmful Omicron is.
Hunter estimates that there are already more than 1,000 infections from the new variant in the UK, while official figures say there have been 246 confirmed cases in the country.
