(ANSA) - BEIJING, DECEMBER 06 - The International Tennis Federation will not cancel tournaments in China on the fears of the fate of local star Peng Shuai because it does not want to "punish 1.4 billion people".
The ITF, the world governing body of tennis, has faced pressure to follow the WTA on stopping all activities in China due to Beijing's refusal to give insurance to Peng, who had denounced the abuses suffered by former vice premier Zhang Gaoli on social media.
ITF president David Haggerty told BBC Sport that the allegations needed to be investigated, but that the federation would not follow the world women's professional tennis association.
