Sergio Mattarella's mandate expires on February 3 (he was sworn in on that day in 2015), so on January 3 Roberto Fico will convene the Parliament in joint session.

As a guideline, Fico could call the session for the days between 18 and 20 January.

We have been talking about the Quirinale and the election of the next President of the Republic at least since this summer, having clarified on several occasions that Mattarella is not available for a second term.

And of course the closer we get to the expiry of the presidential mandate, the more heated the debate on it with some national newspapers openly against and others decidedly in favor of Silvio Berlusconi's candidacy as 13th President of the Republic.

Thus, while the political forces play their cards on the issue, ANSA and DataMediaHub analyzed the presence on Twitter of @Quirinale, the President's institutional account.

Before going into the merits of what emerges from our analysis, we would like to highlight how, contrary to what happens in other countries, the United States and India for all, where the head of state also has his own personal account, this does not happen in Italy.

Mattarella, as regards communication on social networks, only uses official accounts.

A choice that, as we know, was also followed by Mario Draghi and that seems absolutely correct to us.

An institutional role also requires institutional communication, that is, in short, a communication that, in a logic of e-democracy, allows institutions to dialogue with citizens and to easily detect their needs and their satisfaction with services and information. widespread, thus becoming a strategic tool for improving the relationship between administration and citizen.

That said, we have precisely analyzed the activity of the presidential Twitter account from May 3, 2017 to today. In total, 3,200 tweets were posted during the period. Equal to an average of just under two tweets per day (1.91). An average much lower than that of many of the leaders of our own political parties, even if there are peaks of activity linked to particular moments, which however represent an exception. To date there are about 713 thousand followers of @Quirinale on Twitter, while there are only seven who are followed.

Communication is austere, institutional indeed, as it should be. And mainly one-way. Only 56 replies, replies to other accounts, equal to about 2% of the total number of tweets in the period. Almost all of these (54) are in response to their own account. Evidently they correspond to threads made up of several tweets on the same topic. Therefore, it is clear that generating engagement is not one of the communication objectives, even if, of course, on the contrary, presidential tweets are widely cited.

In the time frame examined, the most relaunched, most retweeted tweet is on March 12, 2020, with a note from the President of the Republic on the explosion of the Covid19 pandemic that gets 9,778 retweets and 24,743 likes.

The one that had the most likes was on 11 July 2021 and it is congratulations and gratitude to Mancini and the national team players for the victory of the European football championships.

Tweets are tweeted every day of the week, with a slightly higher number than other days on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The flow of communication on Twitter runs from five in the morning to eleven at night.

With a slight peak at 4pm.

Two are the most cited accounts.

That of Rai1 and that of the President of the Chamber, Roberto Fico.

Mattarella communicates in a unidirectional way, as we have seen, and in fact the hashtag by far the most used is #Mattarella, to enter into conversations relating to the President.
