Earlier this year Reddit user wondered what was behind the decorative bow tie in women’s underwear and found a number of bizarre reasons for its existence.
Now they have all moved on to tinkering with another design addition to the women's panties - the little pocket on the front.
While some did not even notice its existence and others must have noticed and ignored, it turns out that this controversial design addition certainly has an important purpose - and no, this secret compartment is not intended for storing small objects, just in case.

How much does it cost to treat pain and what is the cheapest solution that is also the most effective?
That's why it exists
The "pocket" on the front of the panties is called in English the gusset (wedge) and is actually intended for hygiene purposes and serves as a protective layer of your panties. It is usually made of a breathable fabric that wicks moisture, such as cotton, which helps keep the penis dry and airy. It also has a high absorbency, prevents friction - and reduces the risk of infection. Synthetic materials do not provide protection against abrasion, sweat and bacteria, so the addition of cotton can be the solution to such a problem.
Dr. Sheerin Lahani, a cosmetic doctor and intimate health expert at Elite Aesthetics, told glamor magazine: "When we walk around in the same pair of panties all day, our body produces sweat and moisture while moving, and then it can get trapped in our panties - the bacteria in sweat can be absorbed by the panties. Which are adjacent to the intimate areas like the vagina and anus, and accumulate there. This accumulation of sweat can also alter the natural pH level of the vagina, which in turn can increase the likelihood of conditions such as bacterial vaginal infection, vaginal fungal infection and urinary tract infection. "Fungi and bacteria actually thrive in humid and dark places and certain materials from which underwear is made can create this humid environment - especially if you do not have this lining that will protect the vagina."
So what should you look for when buying underwear?
Well, according to Dr. Lahani, "you want to look for breathability - materials like lycra and nylon certainly do not allow the vagina to breathe, and although you will not get 100% infection if you wear underwear made from these materials - to reduce the risk you should avoid them."
