Robert Wise had indeed filmed the opening scene of his adaptation of the musical in the condemned buildings and the rubble of San Juan Hill, a neighborhood of the Upper West Side of Manhattan, predominantly African-American and Puerto Rican, razed by urban planner Robert Moses for a vast real estate project including Lincoln Center.
