The ecological municipality has decided to ban this flagship product from the end of year celebrations during its receptions and events. A decision

The ecologist town hall of Lyon (Rhône) has decided to ban foie gras at its receptions and official events, according to our colleagues from Lyon Capitale.

Asked about its decision, the town hall explained that foie gras was "the product of breeding going completely against animal welfare".

Lyon is not the first municipality to take this measure.

Before it, the ecological cities of Strasbourg and Grenoble as well as Villeurbanne (PS) also banned the specialty of the South-West from their buffets.

When questioned, the Lyon majority indicated that they wanted to "broaden the dialogue around these questions" so that their initiative "can be followed in restaurants to limit the service of foie gras as much as possible, or even stop it".

The decision of the town hall of Strasbourg wanting to ban foie gras had provoked the anger of Alsatian producers last November.

“We are already weighed down by the health crisis, rising grain prices and bird flu.

If now elected officials attack us, it sends a very bad signal to consumers, ”had criticized Nicolas Lechner, president of the Gänzeliesel association which represents the eleven producers of Alsace.

A flagship product for the end of the year celebrations, foie gras is the subject of much criticism from environmental associations which, for some, are campaigning for its ban.

This is the case of the L214 association, which denounces the conditions for breeding geese and ducks.

"Foie gras is one of the rare productions where an animal is deliberately made sick to remove its liver, which suffers from hepatic steatitis, it is purposely provoked by force-feeding", lamented Brigitte Gothière, co-founder of the association.
