- I hope this doesn't sound pretentious of me, but the first time I saw

West Side Story

was in my head.

I was 10 years old in 1957. We had just moved from New Jersey to settle in Phoenix, Arizona.

My mother, a classical concert pianist, had a large collection of opera records.

One day she came back with the album of Leonard Bernstein's music.

I only listened to it six or seven times.

But I had the feeling that I had memorized it.

And I made a movie by imagining sequences on this soundtrack that I really enjoyed
