The British market research company Euromonitor International has recently published a comprehensive and detailed report that ranks the 100 best cities in the world for 2021, and Tel Aviv and Jerusalem are ranked within it.
Paris took first place as the best city this year. It is followed by Dubai, which is popular with Israelis, Amsterdam, Madrid and Rome, closing the top five. The survey authors write and explain that the role of cities continues to evolve all the time, along with their growing importance for the national economies of each and every country. Today, more than ever, the cities of the world are becoming centers of consumption and investment, as well as tourism.
They further add that however the lack of sufficient data at the city level only, and not just at the national level, is a major obstacle in any discussion dealing with the progress of the cities. Therefore, the need was born to measure what the editors of the report call "urban tourism performance."
The unique index developed by the study's authors compares 54 different indices.
These are concentrated in six main categories: economic and business performance;
Tourist policy and attractiveness of the destination;
Tourism infrastructure;
Health and safety;
There are;
Tourism performance.
The latter category includes, among other things, the demand for tourism in the same destination.
Finally, the six main indices are weighted to a total score, ranging from 1 to 100.

The surprises of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem
Tel Aviv (70th place) and Jerusalem (81st place) also topped the 100th list. However, it is worth noting that Tel Aviv recorded a fairly high score (88) in the "Tourism and Attractiveness Policy" category, compared to a relatively low score (36) in the economic and business performance category.
Although Jerusalem is in 81st place, it holds the highest possible score (100) in the tourism infrastructure category. Jerusalem also excelled in the economic and business performance category, with a score of 94. In this case, Tel Aviv can only envy, but when it comes to the tourism performance category, Jerusalem presents a very low score of only 18.
A look at the report by continents and regions reveals even greater local pride: in the list of top urban destinations in the Middle East and Africa, Tel Aviv ranks in a respectable fifth place, followed by Jerusalem.
"Israel is one of the leading countries in terms of vaccination rates," the survey authors noted.
"In this way, the tourist supply in the cities of Israel helped to increase religious tourism, culinary tourism and more. These recorded a faster recovery during this period."
