Average price differences with the metropolis, up to 40%: in Martinique, as in other regions of the French West Indies

For several weeks, with the protest movements against the obligation to vaccinate caregivers, the question of purchasing power and cost of living has been invited into the crisis.

On social networks, many are those who post the amounts of their receipt.

Among these Internet users, some found themselves having to pay a box of tampons more than 5 euros when in metropolitan France, it costs 91% less ...

We therefore asked Laura, installed in Martinique since February 2021 with her companion, to take part in a comparative test on an average shopping basket, which we have scrupulously reproduced identically, in the same brand, but in Paris.

In total, the 14 items on Laura's list will have cost her 33.09 euros while in metropolitan France, the bill drops to 25.77 euros.

That is 22.12% cheaper than in Martinique.

“The problem is that with this crisis and these roadblocks, the stores are very poorly supplied.

There isn't much to choose from on the shelf.

And it's often the more expensive products that remain, ”Laura says.

Result: the most modest households deprive themselves of certain products.

“We have seen price differences on foodstuffs that could go up to more than 100% compared to the metropolis.

We have the impression of being trapped.

Especially since the wages here are not higher.

It's a real problem and that's also why the Martinicans are protesting ”.
