For nearly two weeks in the spring of 2012, Luka Rocco Magnotta hit the headlines.
The 29-year-old Canadian is wanted by police around the world for the murder of Jun Lin, a Chinese student, whose body he dismembered in Montreal.
The one who dreamed of being a reality TV star was finally arrested in Berlin on June 4, after several days of a flight through Paris.
A human puzzle
It all started on May 29, 2012 with the discovery of two packages with macabre content. A first package is deposited at the headquarters of the Canadian Conservative Party in Ottawa, Canada. Inside this package is found a human foot. On the same day, a second package, intended for the headquarters of the Liberal Party, was intercepted at the city's sorting center. This time, the package contains the hand of a man.
The horror continues some 200 km away, in Montreal, where the concierge of a residence in the “Côte-des-Neiges” district finds a suitcase among the garbage that intrigues him.
The man opens it and discovers a man's torso inside.
Very quickly, the investigators mobilized on the spot understood that they were facing a human puzzle.
These different members found are in fact part of one and the same body, that of Jun Lin, a 33-year-old Chinese student.
An unbearable video
In Montreal, the police quickly identified a potential suspect, Luka Rocco Magnotta, and searched his apartment, located a few meters from where the suitcase was found. The suspicions of the police are on this young man, "very strange" according to a neighbor, for several reasons. Canadian investigators know that Magnotta knew the victim ... The two men had been lovers. The one who will become “the carver of Montreal” is already not unknown to the police. A few years earlier, the young man had filmed himself torturing and killing kittens before posting the videos on social networks.
When they enter the studio, the police face horror: the smell is overpowering, the bed and the refrigerator are stained with blood.
For Ian Lafrenière, spokesperson for the Montreal Police Department, the scene is unbearable: “It's really a horrible crime, there are investigators who have been doing this job for over thirty years and who have never seen anything like it, ”he explains.
But the fear was not at its height: the police found a video a few hours later on two websites.
Ten unbearable minutes during which Magnotta filmed and staged the murder and dismemberment of Jun Lin.
A global hunt
A global hunt begins to find Luka Rocco Magnotta, a former porn actor and escort boy, who roamed the castings to achieve his dream… Become a reality TV star. Magnotta is not, moreover, his original identity. The Canadian was born Eric Clinton Kirk Newman in 1982, before officially changing his name in 2006. When the police set out on Magnotta's trail, he had already been running for three days.
The 29-year-old took a plane to Paris.
In the flight that takes him to France, Magnotta is described as "agitated" by David, a Frenchman seated next to him and whose testimony Le Parisien had been able to obtain.
“He smelled of sweat like someone who hasn't washed in three days.
Towards the end of the flight, he went to the back of the plane and there my friend saw him cry, his hands in front of his eyes, curled up on him, ”testifies the passenger.

French police find traces of Magnotta's arrival at Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport on May 26.
The killer is in Paris, makes the headlines of all the newspapers and psychosis sets in in the capital.
Dozens of police are running after him and witnesses come forward saying they saw the young man in different districts of Paris.
A reliable report will lead the investigators to a hotel at the Porte de Bagnolet, in the east of Paris.
A hotelier claims to have rented a room to a foreigner corresponding to the report of the fugitive.
This time the trail is good but Magnotta has taken off again.
When the police arrive, he is already on board a bus, heading for Germany.
June 4, 2012 marks the end of the flight for the one who dreamed of being an actor.
Magnotta is arrested by police in a Berlin Internet cafe, after being recognized by the manager of the shop: "I told the police that there was someone who would surely interest them."
The Canadian is taken away by the police under the gaze of CCTV cameras.
He was extradited two weeks later to Canada where his trial was held in 2014. Luka Rocco Magnotta was sentenced to life imprisonment, an irreducible sentence of 25 years.
