Three days after the volcanic eruption on the Indonesian island of Java, entire villages are in ashes.

At least 22 people died and several dozen are still missing.

Another small eruption on Monday made the search difficult.

Rescuers had to retreat as new ashes fell from the sky.

In the hospitals of the region there are injured people with burns.

Sudarso and Romli, for example, they work in sand extraction.

A tongue of lava locked around their trucks before they could get to safety.

Sudarso, truck driver:

»I was sitting in the truck and it was getting hotter and hotter.

When the lava was no longer liquid, I jumped out.

My legs are burned in the bucket.

I was looking for an elevated place.

I could sit down on a little rock and wait for help. "

Romli, truck driver:

»I also had to leave my low-loader because of the heat, and I touched lava.

I ran away and climbed a roof.

The ashes and smoke almost suffocated me.

I could barely breathe for 15 minutes.

But God gave me the chance to go on living. "

The two are relatively easily injured.

Nevertheless, their adequate supply is not guaranteed.

Dr.

Wawan Arwijanto, clinic director:

»We have 15 people who were injured by the volcano.

Five of them are in the intensive care unit, ten have burns of less than 60 percent.

Actually, all of them need operations.

But that doesn't work at the same time.

Now we'll wait and see the wounds. "

The clinic director fears that more burn victims will come to his ward.

Because experts warn of further outbreaks.

The head of the observation center for the volcano called on residents to stay away from the mountain.

However, early in the week many made their way back to their homes to check on property and livestock.

Around 2,000 people have lost their homes.

They are housed in mosques and government buildings.

At 3,676 meters, Semeru is the highest mountain on the island - and one of 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia.

The island state lies on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire.

Several tectonic plates rub against each other there and regularly cause earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions.
