Schoolchildren in Baden-Württemberg are allowed to stay at home two days before the Christmas holidays and go into self-selected quarantine.

The Ministry of Culture announced this to the schools in a letter.

This should take into account the parents' wish to reduce the risk of infection before the festival - but on the condition that the children and adolescents do homework given by the school.

According to the ministry, they do not want to officially bring the holidays forward - as of now.

The state government's goal is still to keep schools and daycare centers open.

"In a pandemic situation as we are currently experiencing, however, no measure can be categorically excluded," the letter continues.

The education and science union (GEW) called the quarantine decision understandable in a report by the SWR.

She relaxes the situation and is justifiable for the teachers.

"But that can't be a permanent solution," said GEW managing director Matthias Schneider accordingly.

As in the previous year, a debate arose in the federal states about whether the holidays should be brought forward or extended due to Corona.

In view of the situation, the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina recommended immediate extensive contact restrictions and an early Christmas break in mid-November.

Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg decided in favor of this at the end of November, but education unions and associations rejected such a step.

This would be nothing more than a school closure, it was said.

Saxony and Thuringia decided against early Christmas holidays this week.

Discussions are still ongoing in some other federal states.
