"We are reaching the peak" of the fifth wave, declared Saturday Olivier Véran, in an exclusive interview granted to the Parisian.
The figures of the daily report of Public Health France, indeed reveal that the increase in contaminations tends to slow down.
This Sunday, the authority recorded 43,848 new cases of Covid-19 detected in the last 24 hours in the territory, against 53,720 on Saturday.
But that's still nearly 1,600 more cases than last week (42,252).
The large number of cases detected is also partly due to the dramatic increase in the number of tests performed.
It is estimated that around 800,000 Covid-19 tests are carried out on average each day in France.
More than 800,000 tests are carried out every day (on average) in France, almost a new record.
Unlike last summer, the main reason is not the entry into force of the health pass, but rather the very many positive cases and contact cases.

In hospitals, the increase in hospitalizations continues with 14,050 Covid-19 patients currently treated in health establishments.
They were 13,855 on Saturday and 11,526 last week.
Doctors have identified 472 new people with coronavirus this Saturday admitted to French hospitals in the past 24 hours, against 787 on Saturday.
This decrease is probably explained by the fact that there are fewer hospital admissions on Sundays.
If we compare to last Sunday (369 new entries), the increase is confirmed.
Today, 2,602 patients infected with the coronavirus are hospitalized in intensive care.
As a reminder, these services identified 2,539 patients positive for Covid-19 on Saturday and 2,066 a week ago.
In addition, 48 new deaths were recorded at the hospital, against 66 the day before.
