Rapper Snoop Dogg moments after announcing the nominees for the 79th Golden Globes.MARIO ANZUONI (Reuters)
In Hollywood the show must always go on. This Monday the nominations for the Golden Globes were announced, awards that were among the favorites of the industry, but that today suffer their worst reputational crisis due to the lack of diversity in the voting body and suspicions of corruption among their organizers . The NBC television network will not broadcast the awards for the first time in 25 years after a series of scandals revealed in a journalistic investigation. It's also unclear what the January 9 ceremony will look like and who will attend after the big names in the industry have turned their backs on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Popularly known as the prelude to the Oscars, today the Golden Globes have an uphill road. Producers, movie studios and public relations firms have joined a boycott of the awards since the
Los Angeles Times
revealed
last February
that not a single person of color was among the 87 members of the association. From that moment on, giants like Warner Bros., Amazon and Netflix withdrew their support for the awards. Unlike previous years, the studios have not campaigned to be among the nominees for an award that today is more than longed for.
Rapper Snoop Dogg, famous in the entertainment industry for not saying no to any opportunity in front of the camera, was in charge of announcing the nominations this morning with the president of the HFPA, Helen Hoehne. Both presided over the event at the Beverly Hilton hotel, the traditional home of the Globes. From next month's ceremony it is only known that the philanthropic activities that the organization has carried out for several years will have a prominent focus. Hoehne has told
Variety
that, as in previous years, a number of celebrities have been invited to deliver the statues, but the names of those who have confirmed have not been released.
Hoehne said that 2021 has been a year of "change and reflection" for the organization. “For eight months we have worked tirelessly as an organization to be better,” he said. The controversy forced the association to admit 21 new members. Among these are some Hispanic and African American journalists, although many of those who cover the entertainment and film industry on a daily basis continue to complain of exclusion. The new members, Hoehne said, have brought "a new perspective" and ideas to "keep evolving."
Jane Campion's western
The Power of the Dog
starts as a favorite in the film categories alongside Kenneth Brannagh's most recent film,
Belfast
. Both have aspired to seven awards. Javier Bardem has earned a nomination for his performance in Aaron Sorkin's film about comedian couple Lucy Ball and Desi Arnaz,
Being the Ricardos
. Pedro Almodóvar and his
Parallel Mothers
have been selected in the non-English language film branch together with the Italian Paolo Sorrentino. The composer Alberto Iglesias has also been nominated for his work in the most recent film by the La Mancha director.
HBO leads the nominations in the television categories with 15, five of them for
Succession
. Netflix has 17, but these include feature film nominations for Campion,
Adam McKay's
Don't Look Up
, and
Tick tick ... Boom!
Apple's big Emmy winner Ted Lasso received four nominations, as did the second season of
The Morning Show
, on the same platform.
The glamor that covered these awards has lost much shine in recent months.
Scarlett Johansson has asked not to participate in events of the organization.
Tom Cruise returned the three balloons he has won.
This punishment has been joined by powerful names in the industry, including production companies such as Shonda Rhimes and Ava DuVernay.
The Time's Up movement has also called for dissociation from the HFPA.
Following NBC's refusal to broadcast, the association is in financial straits.
