Covid-19: what to do before vaccinating your child

As of this Wednesday, children "at risk" can, on a non-mandatory basis, receive their first injection against Covid-19, a

This Wednesday, December 15, this is an important step in the vaccination of 5-11 year olds in France against Covid-19.

“At present, it is estimated that 17,000 children are already vaccinated.

But from now on, all those who are affected by certain pathologies will be able to officially receive their first dose of Pfizer vaccine, ”confirms Fabienne Kochert, pediatrician in Orléans (Loiret) and president of the French Association for Ambulatory Pediatrics (AFPA).

This therefore concerns those who suffer from at least one serious risk pathology in the event of infection (such as severe asthma, obesity, diabetes, cancer) or those who live in the entourage of 'an immunocompromised person.

Initially, only hospitals and specialized centers will be in possession of Pfizer's serum intended for the youngest and, as for adolescents aged 12 to 15, the agreement of at least one parent - not necessarily both - will be necessary.

Think about the serological test

One precaution must be taken first and foremost: have your child undergo a serological test.

“Before any injection, it is important to check if they have already contracted the virus, warns the pediatrician.

Today, it is estimated that this is the case for 30% of children.

However, for these, a single injection may be sufficient.

"

When will the campaign be extended to children without any particular pathology?

“For the general population, the situation is unlikely to change by the end of the year.

We are still awaiting the recommendations of the Haute Autorité de santé (HAS) and the National Consultative Ethics Committee (CCNE) before giving our opinion, ”explains Fabienne Kochert.

Concretely, the stake is, according to her, to verify that the American children who will have received their two doses do not develop side effects.

While waiting for these scientific opinions, the government has for its part let it be known that it is ready to start vaccination before Christmas if it receives the authorizations.

One question remains: how would this new 5-11 year old campaign unfold?

The mystery still hangs over.

"All the logistics remain for the moment an unknown", notes the president of the AFPA.
