Spain: the mayor of Seville resigns, a deputy takes over

The current mayor of Seville, Spain's fourth largest city by population, has announced that he will leave his post on January 7th. (HANDLE)


(ANSA) - MADRID, 14 DEC - The current mayor of Seville, the fourth largest city in Spain by population, has announced that he will leave his post on 7 January. Socialist Juan Espadas, mayor of Seville since 2015 and general secretary of the Spanish Socialists Party in the region of Andalusia since last summer, announced his decision at a press conference with local media. His intention, he explained, is to focus on commitments with the party: Espadas aspires to win the next regional elections as a socialist candidate. In addition, he is expected to become a national senator, adds the Spanish press.


    In his place, added the mayor of Seville, one of his deputies, the current city planning, tourism and culture councilor Antonio Muñoz, will become first citizen.
