Shower curtains need to be washed regularly, but how?

Can the shower curtain go in the washing machine?

If you have a shower curtain hanging in your shower, you should clean it from time to time.

Perhaps you have already asked yourself a few questions in this regard:

Why is the shower curtain discolored?

Can you wash a plastic shower curtain in the washing machine?

Can shower curtains get moldy?

Can you iron a shower curtain?

Here you will find the answers to these and other questions about cleaning the shower curtain.

Why is the shower curtain discolored?

Shower curtains discolor if they

are exposed

to

high

humidity

for

too long after a shower

.

If the curtain stays wet for too long after showering and there is also shower gel, shampoo or soap on it, discoloration can quickly develop.

You should ventilate well after showering anyway.

But also remember

to pull

the

shower curtain apart so that it dries faster

.

How do I get mold stains from the shower curtain?

Can shower curtains get

moldy

?

The answer is very clear: yes!

If

yellowish to brownish stains

that can be traced back to mold

have already

formed, you should clean the shower curtain immediately.

Thoroughly

brush the curtain with

alcohol

such as

denatured alcohol

.

Stubborn discoloration can be

treated

with

baking soda

.

Mix the home remedy with a little water to form a paste and apply it to the stains with a sponge.

Can you wash a plastic shower curtain in the washing machine?

Regardless of the material, you can wash your shower curtain in the washing machine, provided the

manufacturer

advises it. Please note the

textile care symbols

on the label of the shower curtain. Some shower curtains can be

washed

at

30 or 40 degrees Celsius

, others even at

60 degrees Celsius.

However, some plastic curtains can only be

hand washed

. If you can wash your shower curtain in the washing machine, you should use

mild detergent

.

Instead of the fabric softener

you can

You

add

50 ml of vinegar

.

It works like a hygiene rinse.

If your shower curtain is very dirty, you should add

50 g of baking soda to the washing drum

.

This strengthens the cleaning power.

In the case of shower curtains that should not be washed in the washing machine, you can resort to cleaning them with household remedies:

Baking soda

: As mentioned above, mix baking soda with water to make a creamy paste.

With this you lubricate the shower curtain and let the whole thing work for three quarters of an hour.

Then rinse the shower curtain with cold water and let it dry well.

Vinegar

: The home remedy is very useful when cleaning the shower curtain as it kills bacteria.

Limescale deposits on the shower curtain can also be removed well with vinegar.

Leave it on for half an hour and then rinse the shower curtain with cold water again.

Citric acid

: like vinegar, citric acid also has a germicidal effect and helps against lime.

In the application, you can orientate yourself on the instructions for cleaning with vinegar.

Be careful not to use hot water.

Because the high temperatures cause calcium citrate to form, which is partly responsible for deposits on the shower curtain.

Also interesting

: Damp toilet paper: That's why you shouldn't throw it in the toilet.

How often should you wash or change the shower curtain?

If, like most people, you have frequent use of your shower curtain, you should

wash

it

at least once a month

.

The distances sometimes depend on how well you let your shower curtain dry after each shower.

It is advisable to have at least two shower curtains that can be exchanged when the other is cleaning.

After every shower, spread out your shower curtain so it can dry properly.

This is the best way to prevent mold.

Can you iron a shower curtain?

The question of whether you can iron a shower curtain also depends on the

manufacturer's

recommendation

as to whether you can wash a shower curtain in the washing machine.

Take a

close look at

the

textile care symbols

. Shower curtains that can be ironed should also be ironed. Because

ironing makes the material of the shower curtain more water-repellent

again. For the impregnation of your shower curtain, however, you should

choose

the

lowest level

on your iron.

In principle, however, shower curtains should not go into the dryer.

It is best

to

dry

it

in the fresh air

before ironing

.

Under no circumstances should you hang it back in the bathroom after washing, as it often sticks to the shower or bathtub and the air circulation in the bathroom is rather poor anyway.

Helpful care tips: this is how your shower curtain will last longer

To extend the life of your shower curtain and prevent mold, you should follow these care tips:

Salt

: After cleaning, soak the shower curtain in salt water for twelve hours.

This creates a protective layer that prevents mold.

Baby

oil: The oil is also suitable for impregnating your shower curtain.

Due to the fat content, mushrooms don't stand a chance and water also rolls off the shower curtain.

Spreading out the curtain

: A little reminder - as mentioned above, you should spread the shower curtain out to dry after every shower.

Ventilate properly

: In general, you should ventilate your bathroom well.

Due to the high humidity, the risk of possible mold growth is particularly high.

Not just on your shower curtain, if you don't ventilate properly, mold can spread quickly throughout the bathroom.
