A tragic end to an aid mission: after a serious car accident near Straussfurt in Thuringia, an 84-year-old woman was hit by a train and killed while rescuing an accident victim.
The two women's cars had previously been left in the track bed after a collision, the police said.
A total of three cars were involved in the accident.
How the collision came about is still unclear.
The 45-year-old was unable to free herself from her car.
According to the police, the 84-year-old and another helper tried to open the door of the vehicle standing on the tracks and push it away.

Meanwhile, a regional train approached, the barriers closed, as the police announced.
Although the driver braked, the train did not come to a stop in time.
The younger woman was pulled out of her car just in time, but the 84-year-old was hit by the train and died.
The 45-year-old and a 41-year-old who were also involved in the accident were slightly injured.
The passengers on the train were uninjured and the engine driver suffered a shock.
