The queen's 3 Christmas trees, the battle of charades and other Christmas traditions of the royal family

Like many people around the world, British royals also have Christmas traditions. Family meals, board games, greeting cards, Christmas trees ... they carry on the rituals as the holidays approach.


Like every year, the Windsors celebrate the holiday season together.

Game of charades, family meal, opening of gifts, Queen Elizabeth II and her family always try to honor these old customs.

There are 12 of them, here are the traditions that members of the British royal family cannot derogate from during the Christmas period.

Christmas lunch in Buckingham

The week before Christmas, Queen Elizabeth II then organizes her annual lunch which brings together all members of the royal family and takes place at Buckingham Palace.

The charity event marathon

The Duchess of Cambridge speaks to young children as she helps them choose Christmas trees, during a visit to the Family Action charity at Peterley Manor Farm.

During the school holidays, they do everything possible to support the causes that are close to their hearts by organizing Christmas parties and events.

The card waltz

Members of the royal family, too, send annual greeting cards.

According to the royal family's official website, the queen is sending around 750 cards.

The train to Sandringham

Members of the Royal Family usually spend the Christmas holidays at their home in Sandringham, 160 km north of London.

Each year, Elizabeth II therefore travels by train to King's Lynn station in Norfolk.

The multiplication of donations

In addition to donations from the Queen, the website The Royal Family reveals that the monarch donates Christmas trees to Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, St. Gilles's Cathedral and the Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh.

The football game

The two British princes, William and Harry, play in their annual charity football match at Queen's Sandringham Estate.

Each year, three trees are brought to the Marble Hall at Buckingham Palace.

A tradition dating back to the 19th century coming from the great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Victoria.

Former Royal Family Chef Darren McGrady says the family also owns a large Christmas tree and a silver artificial one in Sandringham's dining room.

The Queen would even let her great-grandchildren help decorate them.

Gifts given on Christmas Eve

Also according to former royal chef Darren McGrady, the Windsors are honoring their German heritage by opening presents after afternoon tea on Christmas Eve instead of the same day.

Every year on Christmas Day, the Queen is joined by her family for a religious service at St Mary Magdalene Church on the Sandringham Estate.

However, at the end of 2021, it is unlikely that we will see Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle.
