Are you leaving home for the holidays?
Follow a few tips to protect yourself from burglars.
The
police in Mönchengladbach are
currently again warning of possible
break-ins
.
The holidays are approaching and with them some visits to relatives are on the agenda.
If you don't spend Christmas in your own four walls, watch out!
Perpetrators like to use the holiday season, as they can then usually break into abandoned houses or apartments undisturbed.

Burglars mark house doors with plastic strips
A popular tactic among criminals is to
mark the front doors with clear plastic strips
.
The burglars use markings to communicate with each other which residential properties could be worth breaking in.
The police received a reference to several such marked houses in Mönchengladbach-Ost on December 16, 2021.
Inform the police immediately if you discover such a plastic strip on your house or in the neighborhood.

In the past, break-ins with plastic markings increased
In the past few weeks and months, plastic markings have repeatedly been found at crime scenes after break-ins or attempted break-ins all over Germany.
The mostly transparent plastic strips are about four centimeters long and are attached by the perpetrators to
house doors
, in the
garden
or
courtyard
, but also to the
garage
.
When someone is at home and opens the marked door, the plastic strip falls to the floor unnoticed.
But if nobody is at home and the plastic marker is still where the criminals left them, the perpetrators know that probably nobody is home.

How to protect your home from break-ins if you should drive away
When you leave for the holidays or vacation your home,
inform
your
trusted neighbors, relatives or friends
and ask them to pay attention while you are away on plastic markers.
If you detect a plastic marker at your house or in the neighborhood,
inform
the bypass
police
and
uncheck carefully
.
There may still be
traces of the perpetrators
on the plastic strip
as evidence
.
Close
all
windows
and
doors
when you leave the house.
A tilted window is an open window for a criminal burglar.
Make sure not only to pull the front door shut, but to lock it completely.
Do not keep large amounts of cash at home.
The more secure your home, the more difficult it is for perpetrators to break in.
It can therefore be worthwhile to bring the technical security standards in your home up to date.
Because the numbers speak a clear language: the higher the
technical security equipment
, the more likely it will be a break-in attempt.
Burglars usually do not have much time for their deed and are under stress.
If it takes too long, you may give up faster.
