PS5: Does the Playstation 5 cool worse when it is horizontal?

The Playstation 5 can be placed vertically or horizontally.
But does this affect the cooling performance of the fan?
Sony explains.
After Sony unveiled the PlayStation 5 *, gamers had mixed feelings about the design.
The white color was definitely the most noticeable feature as the last few consoles were mostly black.
But that's not the only detail that stands out.
The sheer size of the PS5 is almost reminiscent of a desktop PC.
The console rises up to 40 cm with the frame.

Many gamers are now wondering whether it affects the cooling performance of the console if it is placed horizontally under the television instead of vertically.
Sony explains: would you prefer to set up or lay down your PS5?
For reasons of space, Playstation fans have to wonder how they can best position the PS5 in their home. If you don't have enough space next to the TV table, you will certainly consider
arranging
a suitable place under the TV
. But can the fan still provide
sufficient cooling
if the console is
positioned
horizontally
?
Yasuhiro Ootori from Sony's hardware design department
told the Japanese portal

“From the designer's point of view, there is
no difference in cooling performance between vertical and horizontal installation
.
I think some people think that the heat dissipation efficiency
should be higher
in the vertical installation because of the
chimney effect
.
In a cooling system with an active fan, however, the chimney effect is at the measurement error level.
It works according to the specifications for both horizontal and vertical installation. "

PS5 fan draws air from both sides
Originally there were considerations to install two fans in the PS5.
But a
larger fan
with a diameter of 120 mm turned out to be cheaper, as no additional control unit had to be integrated.
The fan has the advantage that the
air is drawn in from both sides
.
In addition, the fan has two dust catchers.
From the designer's point of view, there is no difference in cooling performance between vertical and horizontal installation.
