A truck crashed into several military vehicles on Autobahn 3 in Bavaria.
Some members of the US armed forces were injured and several vehicles caught fire, a police spokesman said.
The police assume an accident and not an attack.
On Monday, shortly after the Parsberg junction in the Neumarkt district in Upper Palatinate, the tractor-trailer truck drove into the convoy that had been standing with several tankers on the hard shoulder.
According to initial findings, eight people probably had to be taken to hospital with smoke poisoning.
The truck was loaded with sawdust and there is still no precise information about the condition of the driver.
He rammed the military vehicles with full force.
It was initially unclear why the convoy was standing on the hard shoulder.
The highway is closed in both directions, said the police spokesman.
