The sofa at home has been worn out over the years.
In order for you to continue to enjoy sitting on it, it must be cleaned regularly.
The meal is eaten on the sofa, the cat spreads out and the offspring frolic on the upholstered furniture.
Leftover food, animal hair, drinks or even urine stains cannot be avoided on the sofa.
But that doesn't mean you have to get a new sofa right away.
We'll show you how to
clean
the
sofa
and use
simple home remedies to make it look like new again
.
Cleaning the sofa: How to clean the upholstery with baking soda
The well-known household remedy baking soda can cope with many stains on upholstered furniture,
especially those made of woven fabric
.
You can choose whether you prefer to
clean
the sofa
wet or dry
.
The latter works very simply: you sprinkle some baking soda over the affected areas on the upholstery and leave it on overnight.
The next day you suck off the baking soda and the stains are gone.
With wet cleaning, on the other hand, you dip
a sponge in heated water and sprinkle the baking soda over it
.
Then rub the baking soda carefully into the upholstery of the couch.
Then wait until the baking soda has dried before you vacuum it again with the vacuum cleaner.
You can get on
particularly stubborn stains
with a special mixture:
three tablespoons of baking soda and two tablespoons of water
are mixed into a paste and rubbed onto the residue with a spoon.
Then let it dry.
Finally, the paste is also removed with a vacuum cleaner.
Incidentally, baking soda has
great side effects
: It neutralizes unpleasant odors in the upholstery, disinfects and declares war on dust mites.
Before using baking soda, it is best to check your textiles on the sofa for
color fastness
- the home remedy can have a slightly bleaching effect.
Clean the sofa with washing powder
Cleaning with washing powder is similar to that with baking soda.
Put some of it on a sponge that has been dipped in lukewarm water and rub it on the stains on the sofa.
However, do not use too much of the powder so that you can then rinse it out of the fabric with water.
Otherwise you will still get white spots on the sofa - and cleaning can start all over!
Baking soda home remedy declares war on stains on the sofa
Instead of cleaning the sofa with baking soda and washing powder, you can also use baking powder.
In contrast to baking soda, however, baking powder is a bit finer, which is why you should use it in doses.
It is particularly suitable for
selective cleaning
, i.e. less so for large-area cleaning.
To do this, sprinkle some of it on the stain and moisten it with lukewarm water.
After it has dried up, it is vacuumed.

How to clean the sofa with shaving cream
Shaving foam is not necessarily the classic cleaning agent, but it can also remove stains from the sofa - you should only keep it away from leather.
Before using the sofa, vacuum it thoroughly and then spray the foam onto the affected area.
After
ten minutes of exposure,
brush the shaving foam with a soft brush in the direction of the fibers - until the stains are gone.
Then you should spray the entire sofa once with shaving foam and let it work for about five minutes.
This will prevent
water
stains from
appearing on the surface
afterwards
.
Finally, the entire sofa is brushed off or rubbed with a damp cloth.
However, do not use too much water to prevent the sofa from getting soaked.

Work on light stains on microfibre fabrics with a brush or
sponge
.
In general, you should only use a little moisture on the sofa - a sponge or a slightly damp cloth is best for cleaning.
Clean the sofa with
distilled
water
- optionally
add
some
gall soap
to intensify the effect and then wipe the soap off again with the distilled water.
However, please note beforehand whether cleaning with water is recommended according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Use
window cleaner
for heavy soiling and greasy stains on the sofa
,
as it works well against grease.
However, first try the cleaner on an inconspicuous spot on the sofa to see how it affects the surface.
Spray on the greasy stains and work on them with a
medium-hard brush
.
Then wipe it over with distilled water and let the worked area dry on the sofa.
You can repeat this process up to twice, then the stains should be gone from the sofa.
Use the brush to bring the microfibre back into shape and then let the whole thing dry out well.

Can I clean the sofa with a steam cleaner?
It is usually possible
to clean
the sofa with a
steam cleaner
.
However, you should always follow
the manufacturer's instructions when using it
: Is the material robust enough?
What temperatures can it withstand?
Sometimes, for example, it is not advisable to use steam cleaners with microfibre.
In general, it is therefore important that
the fabric on the sofa is insensitive to temperature
and that the steam volume and temperature of the steam cleaner can be reduced.
It also protects the surface of the sofa when you use a
fabric-covered steam wand
.
When using it, you should also be careful not to steam the sofa for too long.
This will kill all the more mites - but conversely, the upholstery will be very soaked, making it difficult to dry it.
In the end, you give the mites an even better basis for survival.
So use
steam sparingly and do not use temperatures that are too hot
.

Urine on the sofa: you can do that
With children or pets in the household, something can go wrong.
But you definitely don't want to get into the mishap - not to mention the smell.
As an immediate measure, first put kitchen paper on the urine stain so that the moisture is sucked out of the sofa.
Then
sprinkle salt over it
so that the remaining urine is sucked out of the sofa.
After five to ten minutes, simply vacuum off the salt or wipe it off with a rag.
To then neutralize the smell, use baking soda again as described above.
Simply spread the powder on the sofa, leave it on for an hour and then vacuum it off.
