The situation is getting worse in Denmark.

The Omicron variant is now the majority in new cases of Covid-19, which reached an all-time high on Tuesday since the start of the pandemic, announced the Minister of Health.

"The Institute of Public Health considers that Omicron is now the dominant variant and is growing," Minister Magnus Heunicke said on Twitter.

In the Scandinavian country of 5.8 million inhabitants, 13,558 new cases have been recorded in the last 24 hours, unprecedented.

More than 500 of these cases are re-infections, according to health authorities.

Denmark, one of the most advanced countries in the world in terms of sequencing, has been among the countries which detect the most cases of Omicron for several days.

All positive samples are detected for variants by PCR within 24 hours, and sequenced within four days.

Implementation of restrictive measures

The country had already warned last week that the new variant was set to become dominant in Copenhagen and would soon be so nationwide.

Faced with the variation and the daily records of the number of cases, the Nordic country has accelerated its vaccination campaign while introducing more restrictive measures, closing cultural life and many places of recreation for the next four weeks.

The new variant of the coronavirus is spreading at a lightning speed, evidenced by the latest statements from several countries.

According to the French government, more than one in three contamination now seems to be linked to Omicron in Paris.

In the United States, Omicron is now dominant, with 73.2% of new Covid-19 infections during the week ending December 18, according to health authorities.

In Norway, health officials said the number of Omicron cases had quadrupled in one week, from just over 900 cases on December 13 to 3,871 on Monday.

But none of them have at this stage required hospitalization.
