The other four garbage collectors' unions, including the CGT and FSU, had already signed an agreement with the Metropolis a week ago on this conflict which concerned the application of the law on 35 hours in the public service, an agreement confirming a reduction of 15% on the 1,607 hours normally to be worked, in order to compensate for the arduous nature of this profession.

The majority union FO had decided to continue the movement to obtain a greater reduction in working time.
However, he was the first to sign in early October an agreement on a 9.5% reduction in working time during a first round of negotiations after a first strike at the end of September.

For a few years now, the indemnity schemes for garbage collectors have grouped together all the premiums for hardship, expertise or supervision that they previously received.
Their amount varies from 100 to 200 euros, on the six territories of the metropolis, detailed to AFP this union representative, specifying that the harmonization will be done this summer, on the occasion of the abolition of the territorial councils planned in within the framework of the 3DS decentralization law.

At the height of this new movement, some 2,500 tonnes of waste had accumulated near dumpsters in the Marseille city, leading the police headquarters, at the request of the metropolis, to requisition agents.
Collecting the remaining garbage is expected to take several days, leaving France's second largest city with its litter piles on Christmas Eve.
