Rare Observation of Barrel Eye (MBARI)
Among all the alien life forms documented in the depths of the ocean, we seem to have found the one that stands out: a barrel-eye fish, which has a transparent head and greenish spherical eyes that are able to observe what is happening above its head - and thus locate its prey easily. The odd fish belongs to the opistoproctic family, which are usually found at depths of 400-2,500 meters below sea level. The one recently recorded on camera was captured 700 feet below the water's surface, off the coast of Florida, where sunlight rays do not reach.
Fish have an amazing ability in their search for food. His eyes, which almost always face upwards, allow him to spot silhouettes of possible prey through his transparent head - and capture him. Since his living environment is in complete darkness, his sense of sight is particularly strong.
Its rare documentation is brought to us by the Research Institute of the "Monterey Bay Aquarium" (MBARI) using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV).
The video reads: "The remotely operated vehicles, Ventana and Doc Ricketts, recorded more than 5,600 successful dives and recorded more than 27,600 hours of video - and yet we encountered this fish only 9 times!".

Let's talk for a moment about the eye position of the barrel-eye fish: its eyeballs are not the two grooves you see in the conventional eye position, but actually the glowing green balls that sit slightly behind.
The circles on the front are actually olfactory organs that can "smell" chemical clues in the water.
At one point in the study of the fish, the researchers hypothesized that his eyes were constantly turning towards the sky, but since then it has become clear that they can roll forward while eating.
The benefits of a transparent head include the ability to look through the transparent shield where your eyes sit and see effectively through your mouth - something that is especially useful when you have a small mouth like that of the barrel eye.
The largest species in the family, the Bathylychnops exilis, reaches a length of 50 cm but the other species are shorter than 20 cm.
