Spain recorded 49,823 cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours on Tuesday, a record since the start of the pandemic, according to the Ministry of Health.

The incidence reached 695 cases per 100,000 population in 14 days on Tuesday, 68% more than a week ago, while the Omicron variant accounted for 47% of new cases between December 6 and 12, in the country.

The record for new infections so far dated from last January, at the height of the third wave, when the country had reached 44,357 infections in 24 hours, said El Pais.

The Spanish daily specifies that the head of government, Pedro Sánchez, will meet with regional presidents on Wednesday to “assess” new restrictions in order to stop contagions.

In this state, the restrictions are decided by the regional governments and for the moment, only Catalonia, the most affected region with 662 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, has implemented severe measures, reports El Pais.

New restrictions?

The north-eastern region, one of the most populous in the country, announced on Tuesday that it will ask the courts for permission to apply new restrictions, including a curfew from 1 to 6 a.m. and the nightclubs closed, from Thursday to Friday night. The establishment of the health passport to enter certain public places has been extended to several regions in recent weeks in order to contain the increase in cases.

The country, one of the most affected by the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic, announced Thursday, December 16 that it will gradually expand access to a third booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to more than 40 years old, in order to increase their protection against the rebound of the epidemic.

Spain, one of the champions of vaccination in Europe (89.7% of those over 12 who are fully vaccinated), also began last week to administer the vaccine to children under 12.

74% of Spanish parents plan to have their child vaccinated, according to a survey.
